Hospitals

Just like there's no romanticism about poverty, except in some novels and fairy tales, there's nothing cheerful about hospitals. It can have news with silver linings, some light at the end of the tunnel, but there's no sunshine, no laughs, no happiness... nothing but pain and hurt and despair.

It is harsh, it is bare, take it or leave it - no, you do not have a choice to leave it. It's the barest parts of Gabriel Garcia Marquez' novels. It haunts you in your sleep, seeps in through your system and makes you feel worthless, hopeless. No matter how hard you try to see the positive side of things, it just hurts and nothing helps. A bitter pill you are not permitted to swallow - you have to savour the bitterness in your mouth and take it in slowly, killing every sweetness left in you.

That's when the better story of God (Ah, Life of Pi!) comes in handy. Like a straw to the drowning man.... hope, hope, hope - that's all that is in life.

To you M, may God be your strength in this long painful path.
